JESUS THE BREAD OF LIFE
Food And Drink That Endures
(John 6:22-40, John 4:1-26)
Jesus declares, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst".(John 6:35)
"Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John4:10)
As a youngster, I loved going to Fall Suppers in our community, it was a potluck meal, and we had many Ukrainian Folk that lived in our community, and the food they brought was for me like soul food that discribed the African American culture. They would bring dishes like, Borscht,Perogies, Cabbage Rolls, Ukrainian Sausage, (kovbasa), Sauerkraut to name a few. For me those were like soul food, it was all sooooo good. Desserts were a bonus and they did not matter what country they came from they we just delicious.
Feasting in different cultures or different natianalities looks different, Africa was very different from Canada, but still good just the same. But there are foods that essential for life, Jesus’ words in John 6:35 are significant for all people: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” So bread and water, thats funny because in our world, we see that as prison food or poor mans food. Bread and water diet is historically used as prison food, to punish a prisoner often in silitart confinement. It is sometimes adopted as a strict religious or spiritual fast.
Yet, Jesus calls himself the "bread of life" and "living water" to signify that he is the essential, divine source of eternal spiritual sustenance and satisfaction, contrasting with physical food that only temporarily satisfies. He tells us that believing in him provides everlasting life, quenches deepest spiritual thirst, and fulfills the human need for righteousness.
Such claims as these would be outrageous if they were made by a mere human being. But Jesus, the Christ, could make such astounding claims because He’s the very Son of God. He told “sign-seekers”—those seeking immediate, short-term benefit (see vv. 2, 14, 26, 30)—that satisfaction of physical hunger wasn’t enough. As the Son of God, Jesus is the source of true life (14:6) and the sustainer of life. All those who believe in Him for the forgiveness of sins through His death and resurrection (11:25-26) share His life. Jesus is the essential food for the soul. Life, nourishment, and true satisfaction are found in Him alone.
Believing in Jesus will satisfy you? Both spiritual hunder and thirst will be satisfied in Him. I ask you today, if you are not seeking Jesus today to be satisfied, why not. Check out His claim, He says, “I am the bread of life”? He also said to the woman at the well, "you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” Jesus is the way, the truth and the Life, HE is the only one that can truely satisfy for hungry and thirsty soul. Dear Jesus, I want to thank you for being the giver and sustainer of life. I pray I will find you to be enough and be the satisfier of my soul. AMEN
