Using God's Name IN VANE
OMG,Geeeez,By Gad,..........
Not to mention those who use the actual words and think nothing of it.
(Exodus 20:1-17,Matthew 5:33-37)
There are many morewords and forms of words that can be translated as cuses or using the name of God in vain, the three above as some of the most common. There are also many 3 and 4vletter words that I don't like to hear and at times if used too often still offend me and I need to deal with my personal issues in relation to them At times, I have to say something to the one using the profanity. As I go through this I will explain why it horrifies me, when people us such language with out any guilt.
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
(Exodus 20:7-8)
But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. (Matthew 5:37)
I understand that being turned off or offended by this foul language is common, but for someone who has been convicted by God, through His eord about using this kind of language, it is even more so. When we realize that these word came about out of disrespct and were used to convey that disrespect, to cause shock, and to show aggression, for me, when it is used no matter wheather it was directed at me or not, I feel it as being dorected against God. It comes to my senses as an unwanted intrusion as evil thought and as an aweful habit.Thats right people use these words with no thought of what they are saying or what they may mean.
For me, when many of these words are used, its very much like being forced to look at porn and or other graphic images Yes, it forces unwanted images into my mind, which I have to imediatly recant, because they will often bring disgusting, thoughts of which I personally want nothing to do with.
For some reason, the person using these words, think it gives them power when using them. Or it helps them get a point across. I personally enjoyed the branding bees, in the springs when we went around helping others brand their calves, but because of the language associated with the crews we had to work with, I disliked being therebecause of the cruel language and jokes that were told or spoken. For me it was a very toxic enviroment.
You may ask, well, how did you deal with that? First I had to set some boundries, I decided that when it started I would go and sit alone or go for a walk. Or I would calmly express that I was uncomfortable with the language, if that didnt work then I would walk away. and Finally, if it came down to it, I would address the situation directly by stating the impact it had on me, and would explain why AS in the effect it would have on the young and or on customers, depending on the events it was involved with.
I have tried, and I do understand, the person may be using it to vent stress to releave an "edgy" feeling. Which they thing will relieve the stress in the moment. But I have come to realize that for many it is simpaly a bad habit, and do not intend to cause offense.
But for me, as a believer is God and His word, foul language and the misuse of God's name (taking the Lord's name in vain) I view it as disrespectful, sinful, or taboo behaviors. The misuse of God's name, or blasphemy, involves using sacred names—God, Jesus, or saints—in a casual, profane, or disrespectful manner, such as in curses or empty expressions. For me it is a lack of reverence, I believe it is a reflection of deeper, neglectful, or angry feelings towards God
The command to not misuse God's name comes from the Third Commandment in Exodus 20:7, which states that God will not hold anyone "guiltless" who treats His name with disrespect. It implies that the name of God is holy and should only be used in ways that honor His character.
Here are some verses in the Bible that tells us, we are not to do this at all.. The one that got me as (Matthew 5:34-37)
Exodus 20:7 (Third Commandment): "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain".
Deuteronomy 5:11: A restatement of the commandment: "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold [him] guiltless that taketh his name in vain".
Leviticus 19:12: "And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I [am] the LORD".
Matthew 5:34-37: Jesus advises against taking oaths in God's name at all, saying, "Let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'".
Matthew 7:21: Warns against hypocrisy—using the Lord's name while not doing His will: "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven..."
I know, it is a personal issue between the user and God, so I have decided to pray for those I hear using such language and asking God to forgive them, for not relizing, first they are defaming God and second they are offending others around them.
Lord help me, in loving them inspite of the language they are usung.. It is in your name I pray Amen
